Written Instructions — Figure Eight Loop

  1. Start a figure eight Cross working end over standing part, pass behind standing part.
  2. Fold working end into a bight Instead of threading the end through, fold it into a bight (loop).
  3. Pass bight through top loop Push the bight through the top loop of the figure eight from back to front.
  4. Pull loop and standing line Tighten by pulling the loop and standing line in opposite directions.

Tips for Tying a Figure Eight Loop

  • Faster to tie than the follow-through — use when going directly to a carabiner rather than through a harness.
  • The figure eight shape should be clearly visible on the back of the finished knot — if you can't see it, untie and retry.
  • Easier to untie after loading than the follow-through because the doubled portion is shorter.
  • The loop must be sized before tightening — much harder to adjust after cinching.
