Written Instructions — Palomar Knot
- Double the line Fold 6 inches of line back on itself to create a doubled loop.
- Pass through eye Thread the doubled loop through the hook eye from front to back. Pull a few inches through.
- Tie an overhand knot With the doubled line, tie a simple overhand knot. Leave it loose — the hook should dangle below freely.
- Pass hook through loop Take the entire hook and pass it upward through the doubled loop.
- Wet and tighten Moisten with saliva. Pull the main line to slide the overhand knot down and seat it against the eye. Trim tag end.
Tips for Tying a Palomar Knot
- Always wet the knot before pulling tight — dry tightening generates heat that weakens monofilament.
- Works on braided line without modification — one reason it's a universal go-to knot.
- If the hook eye is too small to pass a doubled loop through, use the Improved Clinch instead.
- For larger lures, double the line and thread it through twice before tying the overhand knot.
