Written Instructions — Improved Clinch Knot
- Thread through the eye Pass 6–8 inches of line through the hook or lure eye. Hold both the main line and tag end between your fingers below the eye.
- Wrap 5 times With the tag end, make 5 tight wraps around the main line going away from the hook.
- Thread back through first loop Pass the tag end back through the small loop formed right next to the hook eye.
- Thread through the large loop Pass the tag end back through the large loop just created. This is the 'improved' step that prevents slipping.
- Wet and tighten Moisten, pull main line and tag end simultaneously to compress the coils against the eye. Trim to 1/8 inch.
Tips for Tying a Improved Clinch Knot
- Five wraps is standard for lines up to 20 lb. Use 4 wraps for heavy line, 6–7 for lines under 4 lb.
- Keep your wraps neat and untwisted — overlapping wraps reduce strength significantly.
- The 'improved' step (threading through the large loop) is what separates this from a basic clinch. Don't skip it.
- Fluorocarbon is stiffer than mono — wet it more thoroughly before tightening.
