How to Tie a Reef Knot
The reef knot is the sailor's classic for tying a second reef in a sail — it's flat, lies parallel to the load, and can be released instantly even after heavy loading by pushing one side sideways.

Written Instructions — Reef Knot
- Left over right Cross the left end over the right end and tuck under. Pull snug.
- Right over left Now cross the right end over the left end and tuck under — opposite direction from step 1.
- Pull both ends Pull both ends apart to tighten the knot flat against the sail or material.
- Verify correct shape The reef knot must be flat with two parallel loops. If any loop sticks out to the side, retie — you have a granny knot.
- Release — capsize method To release: push one bight sideways toward the knot center. The knot capsizes and falls apart in one motion — critical for reefing in heavy weather.
Tips for Tying a Reef Knot
- Left over right, right over left — the same sequence as the square knot. Sailors sometimes say 'reef and right.'
- The reef knot capsizes (releases) when you push one loop toward the knot — practice this in dry conditions.
- Never use a reef knot to join two ropes bearing significant load — use a sheet bend for joining.
- On a sail reef, both sides must be tied simultaneously for the sail to hold its shape correctly.
